Charles Krauthammer is a quadriplegic. He suffered a cervical spinal cord injury in a diving accident during his first year of medical school at Harvard.
At age 22, Krauthammer hit his head on the bottom of the pool while diving with his friend. He was hospitalized for 14 months following the accident, which left him with limited functioning in his arms, legs and torso. He has been in a wheelchair ever since. Krauthammer had been studying the spinal cord in school at the time of the accident and, ironically, had brought a book on the anatomy of the spinal cord to the pool, along with ‘Man’s Fate’ by André Malraux.
