According to the Mayo Clinic, a face-lift is by definition a cosmetic surgical procedure. Face-lifts are performed to improve the look of the face and neck. The procedure enhances the look of facial skin that has started to sag and droop by removing excess skin and repositioning facial contours.

A face-lift does not improve the quality of facial skin. The effects of sun damage and wrinkles remain even after a face-lift. The Mayo Clinic suggests that patients consider a skin-resurfacing procedure in order to improve facial skin quality. Additional procedures, such as eyelid surgery or a brow lift, can also be performed.
