When do babies start teething?

Babies typically start teething around six months, but it can happen as late as 12 months. The lower front teeth usually appear first, and the top front teeth erupt within a couple of months.

A baby’s first tooth eruption varies based on factors like family history, and the order may vary as well. Sometimes, the top teeth erupt before the bottom teeth. Symptoms of teething include fussiness, excess drooling and attempting to chew on hard items. These mild symptoms are not cause for concern, but babies exhibiting more severe symptoms should be seen by a doctor. Rubbing a baby’s gums with clean, cool objects, such as a finger or teething ring, often provide relief for teething symptoms.
