Nicole Richie's biological mom is Karen Escovedo, the former executive assistant of Sheila E., who happens to be Nicole's aunt. Escovedo is of Creole, Afro-Mexican and Spanish ancestry.

Lionel Richie and Brenda Harvey were responsible for raising Nicole since she was 2 years old. They adopted her at age 9, but as a result of a cheating scandal, Brenda and Lionel split. Nicole has two half- siblings named Sofia and Myles from Lionel 's second marriage. Michael Jackson is her godfather and Nancy Davis is her godmother. Nicole and her biological mother are in each other's lives, but Nicole considers Brenda and Lionel her parents.
