Consistent, fair discipline is the key to successfully dealing with an out-of-control toddler. Children crave boundaries, so parents and caregivers must set clear boundaries and deliver age-appropriate consequences each time these boundaries are crossed.

Most toddlers begin to test boundaries at around 18 months of age, reports the American Academy of Pediatrics. Since structure is very important to young children, expectations and consequences need to be delivered in a consistent, predictable manner.

Parents can also encourage good behavior by modeling calm, kind behavior for their children. Praise the child for making good choices, and don't give in to temper tantrums or meltdowns.
