Alexandria is the county seat of Douglas County, Minnesota. It is located near Interstate 94 in central Minnesota. City officials tout Alexandria as a vacation location due to its scenic parks, recreation areas and many community events.

Among the events Alexandria hosts are the Art in the Park festival in July, Douglas County Fair in August, Grape Stomp in September and the Apple Fest in October. Douglas County Hospital is Alexandria's largest employer with 868 employees, as of 2015.

Alexandria was settled in 1858 and named for two Maryland men, Alexander and William Kirkhead. It was organized under a village form of government in 1877 and became a city in 1909.
