Wales is in the United Kingdom to the west of England. Its total area is just over 8,000 square miles which is roughly half the size of Switzerland or about the same size as Massachusetts. As of 2012, the population of Wales was just over 3 million people.
The capital city of Wales is Cardiff, and the official languages of the country are English and Welsh. The Hay Festival, held in Hay-on-Wye in mid-Wales, is the world's most famous literary and arts festival. Famous authors from Wales include Dylan Thomas, Roald Dahl and Ken Follett. Wales is home to over 600 castles, more per square mile than anywhere else in the world.
