A parotid tumor is an abnormal growth on the parotid gland, according to the Central California Ear, Nose & Throat Medical Group. Most parotid tumors are benign, or noncancerous and slow-growing. On rare occasions, parotid tumors can be malignant, fast-growing and life-threatening.
Parotid tumors are diagnosed through a physical examination and a CT scan. A biopsy is performed to determine malignancy. Treatment for parotid tumors is surgery, according to the Central California Ear, Nose & Throat Medical Group. All or part of the parotid gland is removed. This procedure is called a parotidectomy, and whether the entire gland is removed depends on how big the tumor is or if chronic infection occurs.
