Who banned Christmas between 1647 and 1660?

In England, an Act of Parliament backed by Oliver Cromwell effectively put a ban on Christmas from 1647 to 1660. This ban was met with uproar, and people continued to celebrate Christmas in secret in spite of the ban.

The ban on Christmas was brought about by the rise of Christian Puritans, such as Cromwell. The Christian Puritans believed that there was no biblical evidence to substantiate the belief that Christmas falls on December 25 and that Christmas was a deeply commercial and pagan holiday. Among many things, it was illegal to congregate for Christmas mass, eat mince pies and decorate with evergreens.
