Jacques Marquette was born in France, but with a keen interest in travel and discovery, he traveled to Quebec, Canada in the Americas to be a missionary. He later traveled down the Mississippi River into what is now the United States.

In 1666, Marquette traveled from France to the Americas to work as a missionary for the indigenous people in the Americas and ended up founding many Jesuit missions in present-day Michigan. Marquette, along with explorer Louis Joliet, also explored and mapped the upper part of the Mississippi River, an expedition that Marquette used to establish more missions and spread the word of God among the Native Americans he encountered along the way.
