When did Virginia become a state?

Virginia became a state on June 25, 1788. It was one of the original 13 colonies and was the 10th to become a state. Prior to its grant of statehood, the area was known as the Colony of Virginia.

The Fifth Virginia Convention declared independence on May 15, 1776, and brought a resolution for independence to the Continental Congress on June 7th of that year. It officially became a state when the Virginia Ratifying Convention ratified the U.S. Constitution. In 1792, some western counties of Virginia joined to become the state of Kentucky. During the Civil War in 1863, additional area broke away and formed the state of West Virginia.
