The first mobile phone was the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x, and it weighed 2.5 pounds. It had a text-only LED screen and had only one line of text. It was 10 years after the invention before consumers could purchase this mobile phone. On September 21, 1983, the FCC approved the phone for consumers to buy. The man responsible for inventing the first mobile phone was Martin Cooper from Motorola. His first call was to Bell Systems' Joel Engel, his rival at the time.
