Puritan Thomas Hooker and Puritans from the Massachusetts Plymouth and Bay colonies founded Connecticut. Hooker also founded the city of Hartford and inspired the first democratic constitution to establish a representative government.
Early Connecticut settlements appeared in 1633 at Windsor, in 1634 at Wethersfield and in 1636 at Springfield and Hartford. Thomas Hooker was administrator of the Hartford settlement. Another Puritan group from Massachusetts established a colony at New Haven. Connecticut self-government began following the Pequot War in 1638 with the Hartford Treaty. The three Puritan settlements combined under charter as a colony in 1663. Connecticut became a state on Jan. 9, 1788.
