Some fun facts for kids to learn about Harriet Tubman include the fact that she escaped slavery in 1849. She returned to the South numerous times to help family members and other slaves escape to freedom. Due to her efforts, she became known as the "Conductor" of the Underground Railroad.
Born in 1820, Harriet Tubman worked as a spy for the Union army and led a raid on the Combahee River, resulting in 700 South Carolinian slaves finding freedom.
Although famous, Tubman never found financial freedom. Her friends and admirers helped raise money for her throughout her later years. The proceeds of the biography "Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman," written by Sarah H. Bradford, went directly to Tubman.
