The largest amphibious invasion in history was conducted by the Allied Forces on June, 6, 1944. The operation was conducted on the coast of France against positions held by the German military.
The invasion that took place on this date was called Operation Overlord and is commonly referred to as "D-Day." The invasion required the use of over 5,000 ships, which carried over 150,000 Allied soldiers as well as large amounts of military equipment. Despite incurring heavy casualties, the assault was a success. The Allied forces were able to establish themselves on the coast and forced the German army to retreat further inland.
