The length of the rupture caused by the 1927 Gulang earthquake was 23 kilometers. The earthquake occurred on May 22 and measured 7.6 on the Richter scale.
The earthquake caused a multitude of ground fissures up to 14 kilometers long, 13 meters wide and 7 meters deep. The tremors were felt up to 700 kilometers away from the epicenter.
The U.S. Geological Survey reports that the area of greatest intensity suffered extreme damage. The town of Gulang was almost completely destroyed, and more than 40,900 people were killed. Landslides caused by the earthquake buried several villages in the Dongchuan area and created a new lake in Wuwei county. More than 250,000 livestock were killed in the earthquake.
