Captain Cook's ship was the H.M.S. Endeavor. She was a flat-bottomed and solidly built ship that was the first European vessel to make landfall in Australia.
Originally, the H.M.S. Endeavor was a merchant ship named Earl of Pembroke. In 1768, the Royal Society persuaded King George III to study the path of Venus over the sun. Admiralty later decided to include a covert mission to discover the southern continent. James Cook was chosen to lead these missions, and he purchased and refit the ship, changing its name to H.M.S. Endeavor. The ship had a long service time but was eventually scuttled along with other ships in a blockade of Narragansett Bay in 1778.
