In 1841, the author Edgar Allan Poe published a cryptogram in Graham's magazine, of which he was the editor. He bet that readers would not be able to solve it and offered a year's subscription to anyone that did, according to The New Yorker.
In 1932 a newspaper cryptogram writer published the first issue of "The Cryptogram." This is the official journal of the American Cryptogram Association and continues to run bimonthly as of 2015.
The serial murderer known as the Zodiac Killer taunted police by sending ciphers to three newspapers, warning that if they didn't publish them he would kill again, notes Biography.com.
