The company was founded in 1856 when a sixteen-year-old Stanley Gibbons began selling stamps from his father's chemist shop in Plymouth. It opened its first store on the Strand in 1891. The company currently sells a broad range of collectible stamps as well as catalogs, albums, album supplements, accessories, mounts and hinges, and guidebooks. However, it does some business in other forms of collectible items, namely coins, banknotes, and military and commemorative medals.
