What is a clivia plant?

The clivia plant is a tropical species from South Africa with dark green leaves and bright yellow or orange blooms. It grows well in containers and in USDA Hardiness Zones 9 to 11.
The clivia plant has sword-like leaves and flowers with six petals. The plant prefers partial to full shade and a well-draining soil that is loamy. The clivia plant should be fertilized with a 6-6-6 slow-release fertilizer blend. Deadheading spent blooms should be done in the late spring. The plant needs to be dug up and divided every three to five years. This should be done after the flowering season is completed.
