When is the best time to plant alfalfa hay seeds?

The optimal planting time for alfalfa depends on the climate region. In cooler climates, alfalfa is best planted in spring and after the initial thaw, while in milder climates, alfalfa can be planted in autumn.
The recommended density of seed is approximately 1/4 pound per 25 square feet. The seeds should be scattered into rows 18 to 24 inches apart and buried in 1/2 inch of soil. If planted in appropriate soil in an area with full sun, sprouts generally appear 7 to 10 days after planting. When alfalfa is grown as animal feed, it is harvested prior to blooming but only in dry weather. Rain can inflict mold on harvested shoots.
