What is a growing pattern in mathematics?

In mathematics, the term "growing pattern" refers to a geometric structure or an arithmetic sequence that expands through the addition of an element to the pattern. A type of growing pattern, called a "linear growing pattern," increments or decrements by a constant difference.

Teachers often use patterns to simplify mathematical concepts for kindergarten students. By recognizing patterns, schoolchildren are able to identify the "core," which is the basic unit that repeats in a pattern. Growing patterns can involve different objects, figures, shapes, sounds, movements or numbers. The opposite of a growing pattern is called a "shrinking pattern," which decreases through the subtraction of an element.
