What are Korean numbers?

There are two sets of Korean numbers: the native Korean system and the Sino-Korean or Chinese system. The native numbers are used to identify items fewer than 100 and to indicate age. The Chinese-based numbers are used to designate time, money, addresses, phone numbers and numbers greater than 100.

The number 1 is “hana” in native Korean and “il” in Sino-Korean. These numerals have corresponding symbols. Omniglot provides a table of numerals from 1 to one trillion and their equivalent symbols and names in native Korean and Sino-Korean.

The Korean counting system uses increments of 10,000 instead of 1,000. Thus, 100,000 is denoted as “10 ten-thousands” and not “100 thousands.”
