What is Perl?

Perl is a general-purpose computer programming language developed by Larry Wall in 1987. It borrows heavily from other programming languages, such as C, Lisp, Unix shell, PHP, Python, Ruby, Pascal and Microsoft Windows PowerShell. Perl is used in graphics and network programming, system administration and Internet coding.

Perl was originally constructed to deal with text manipulation for the processing of reports. As a combination of other programming languages, it has developed into a robust language in and of itself, with one if its offshoots, Perl 5, becoming a separate language altogether. As of 2014, Perl handles complex data structures, compiler directives and other aspects of an object-oriented programming model.
