How many species of grouper are there?

There are over 400 species in the grouper family. It is one of the largest fish families in the sea and is related to sea bass. Grouper is found in Florida and the mid-Atlantic states of the United States, as well as in South America and the Gulf of Mexico.

Common species of grouper include gag, red and black grouper. The meat is firm with a mild sweet flavor. The fish is often found inshore on the edges of coral reefs or on deep grass flats.
