Perlite has a variety of industrial uses as an ingredient in the manufacturing of construction and masonry materials, and as a soil additive in horticultural applications. It is also used as a filtering agent in commercial brewing operations.

In the manufacturing process, perlite is used for construction materials such as ceiling tiles, building insulation and lightweight plasters. Masonry workers frequently use perlite as an additive to cement and mortar mixtures.

Because of its light weight and drainage properties, horticulturists use perlite as a soil additive to provide aeration and allow greater flow of water and oxygen. Perlite is an excellent starting medium for young seedlings, since it does not retain excessive water or exert pressure on the delicate root systems of developing plants, and it allows them plenty of oxygen and space to develop.
