What race do Indians belong to?

Racial classifications are no longer considered scientifically valid, according to the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences. History Matters, a George Mason University webpage, states that anthropologists used to consider Asian Indians Caucasian but not of the same category as a white American of European origin.
The confusion over the racial classification of natives of India led to a 1923 United States Supreme Court ruling that Indians were not eligible for citizenship, despite the fact that anthropologists of the time considered them Caucasian. Indians do not actually belong to any racial group, because, as the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences says, racial classification is pseudoscience. Both Asian Indian and Native American are considered individual ethnic groups for U.S. census purposes, according to Slate.
