Kate Chopin was born on Feb. 8, 1850, in St. Louis, Mo. She began writing after her husband died on their plantation in Louisiana in 1882. Chopin primarily wrote short stories and articles at the start of her writing career in the early 1880s. Chopin's most well-known work was her novel "The Awakening," written in 1899. However, it was negatively received by the literary community due to it addressing topics considered controversial at the time, such as marriage, suicide and sexuality. Chopin returned to writing short stories after the criticism she received from "The Awakening."
