Thomas Gunn was born in Gravesend, England, in 1929, the son of two journalists. In the 1950's, he was part of a group of writers from England called The Movement. He emigrated to the United States in 1954, and began teaching at Stanford University. He also had two long teaching stints at the University of California-Berkeley. From 1960 until the time of his death in 2004, Gunn lived in the famous Haight Ashbury neighborhood in San Francisco. His most famous work, "The Man with Night Sweats," was inspired by friends of Gunn's who had died of AIDS.
