In a chain argument, the premises are linked by a common clause. The consequent ("then") in one premise becomes the antecedent ("if") of the premise that follows it. In the example above, the common clause is "then they will be late" / "if they are late."\nA chain argument is often used to discourage someone from taking a particular action, suggesting that the apparently innocent action will lead, through a series of steps, to disaster. The argument may be sound or unsound. A chain argument is susceptible to the slippery slope fallacy, in which too little evidence exists to support the claim t..

Start by showing the students some simple cause and effect examples that show a very obvious effect for the cause. For example, give a natural disaster, such as an earthquake or hurricane, as the cause. For the effect, use mudslides as the example. Then, shift mudslides to the cause, and use property loss and flooding as the effect. Let the students take over and continue going down the list of causes and effects using this singular example.\nTeaching cause and effect helps students understand consequences of certain actions, in addition to learning analytical thinking. The most famous phrase associated with the Statue of Liberty, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free," comes from the poem "The New Colossus." The poem was written by Emma Lazarus as part of a campaign to raise money to build a pedestal for the statue. It was read at an auction of art and literary works, but it was not intended as a part of the final pedestal. When the statue opened in 1886, there was no plaque. In 1901, Georgina Schuyler, a friend of Emma Lazarus, began a campaign to memorialize the poem, and in 1903, a bronze plaque with the inscribed po..
