The Enlightenment was a period of radical change in thought and philosophy that occurred throughout much of Western Europe as well as some areas beyond. During this period, intellectuals moved away from religion in order to develop ideologies based on secular human reason. This had a direct effect on the arts both because it gave artists greater freedom to create nonreligious works and because the new thoughts of the day inspired many wealthy patrons to invest in the arts.
