When did Virginia become a state?

The Fifth Virginia Convention declared independence on May 15, 1776, and brought a resolution for independence to the Continental Congress on June 7th of that year. It officially became a state when the Virginia Ratifying Convention ratified the U.S. Constitution. In 1792, some western counties of Virginia joined to become the state of Kentucky. During the Civil War in 1863, additional area broke away and formed the state of West Virginia.

Italy occupied Ethiopia for 5 years but failed to colonize it. When Italy declared that Ethiopia was her protectorate, Menelik II dismissed the claim in 1890. Under his leadership, the Ethiopian troops won the war, leaving more than 4,000 Italian soldiers dead or missing. Two thousand Italian soldiers were captured.
