Chavez was born in Arizona to a Mexican-American family with six children. His family eventually moved to California, where his parents worked as migrant farm workers. Chavez also worked on farms until his mid-20s when he became involved with the Community Service Organization. In 1962, he founded the National Farm Workers Association and led several labor strikes in an effort to gain better pay and treatment for farm workers.
