When did the Vietnam conflict end?

The conflict in Vietnam began in 1945 as an anti-c battle between the French government and the Vietnamese. After defeating the French forces in 1954, Vietnam split in two, creating the communist North Vietnam and the anti-communist South Vietnam. After the South refused to hold a unifying election in 1956, forces from the North attacked the government of South Vietnam in 1958.
