According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the use of an invention disclosure form has been discontinued as of Feb. 1, 2007. The form has been replaced with an application for a provisional patent. The new application offers the inventors more protection for their inventions than the former disclosure form. There is only a one year period allowed for the inventor to file for a true patent with the a provisional patent, unlike the two year period that was used with the invention disclosure form.
