The foundations of the Cold War were laid before the end of World War II at the Yalta and Potsdam Conferences, when administration of postwar Europe was divided up between the Allied Powers of the United States, Great Britain, France and the Soviet Union. The agreements effectively divided Europe into Western and Eastern blocs. Although Soviet premier Joseph Stalin assured the Western allies he would allow free elections in Eastern Europe, he reneged on his promise and installed Soviet-controlled communist governments instead.\nFearing Soviet expansion, the United States instituted a policy of..

The Titanic wasn't much wider than other contemporary ships because the limitation on ship width isn't how large you can build them, but rather how wide the dock accommodation is. Most of the Titanic's size was in its length, a full 882 feet 9 inches. The Titanic's Olympic-class design was a larger version of owner White Star Line's earlier ship, the Adriatic, with radical modifications to withstand the heavier stress of a larger hull.

A belief in Manifest Destiny also served to justify the westward settlers taking over lands formerly occupied by Native Americans. The indigenous tribes were viewed by many as uncivilized savages and racial and religious rhetoric was often incorporated into Manifest Destiny's vision of civilizing Native Americans so that they could live peacefully with the white settlers. The end result, however, was conflict, and in some cases, forced relocation of entire indigenous tribes.

Elm bark was a favorite material of eastern woodland tribes for constructing both houses and canoes. The bark could be peeled off in whole sheets (elm trees were capable of growing to tremendous sizes) and manipulated in multiple ways. Elm bark was not very long-lasting in rough water, however, so the Iroquois regarded these canoes as disposable. They used them primarily for situations where a canoe needed to be constructed quickly and the longevity of the vessel was not a concern. An elm-bark canoe was advantageous because it could be left at the beginning of a long journey, if necessary, and..

The end of the Cold War began in the late 1980s with the ascension of Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. He weakened the Soviet state by dissolving autocratic elements of the government and instilling democratic institutions. These changes shifted power away from his own party and into the hands of surrounding nations. The democratization of East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary hastened the end of the Cold War, and the unification of East and West Germany further led to the Soviet Union's downfall. The Cold War also ended when an anticommunist leader who was democratically elect..
