Andrew Jackson came to the presidency with the status of a war hero, having led his army to victory in the Battle of New Orleans in the closing moments of the War of 1812. In the presidential election of 1824, Jackson won the popular vote, but lost the presidency due to what he termed a corrupt bargain between Henry Clay and John Quincy Adams. These elevators had ropes that could be worn out and were not generally used by passengers. In 1852, Elisha Graves Otis invented the safety elevator, which used a break that could suspend the car in place if the rope broke. President Taft was born Sept. 15, 1857. He was a lawyer, judge, law professor and Secretary of War under President Theodore Roosevelt, who supported Taft's candidacy to succeed him. Ironically, Roosevelt formed his own political party, the Bull Moose Party, and ran against Taft in the election of 1912. Roosevelt did not win, but his candidacy took support away from Taft, allowing Woodrow Wilson to win the election. Taft's term in office saw the 16th Amendment passed, which allowed the United States to collect income taxes and admitted Arizona and New Mexico to the nation.

The use of superconductors allows maglev trains to appear to float. These trains use two types of superconducting magnets, a guiding magnet on the side of the train tracks and an electromagnetic levitation magnet. The electromagnetic levitation magnet is located under magnetic tracks which eliminates the friction between the train and the tracks. This allows the train to travel at high speeds only millimeters above the tracks. Onnes received the Nobel Prize in physics 1913 for his work with superconductivity.

Baird became preoccupied with constructing a working television shortly after World War I, when he moved to the south coast of England. Setting himself up in a small workshop, he created the first working model out of odds and ends that included a tea chest, a biscuit tin, a toy electric motor, some bicycle light lenses, a pair of scissors, glue and sealing wax. In 1924, he transmitted a flickering image across the span of several feet. In 1925, he created the first real television picture in grayscale, first using a ventriloquist's dummy and then a human face. In early 1926, he demonstra..
