Mandalay is considered the center of Burmese culture and the main commercial, educational and health center of upper Burma. Mandalay was the last capital city of the independent Burmese kingdom and was founded by King Mindon to replace the former capital of Amarapura. The city and kingdom fell on Nov. 28, 1885, when the British completed their Burmese conquest.
