The lunar surface is composed entirely of four types of igneous rocks: basalt, anthracite, breccia and lunar soil. The first type, found in the flat plains of the moon known as Maria, is a dark volcanic rock formed from rapidly cooled lava flows. Anthracite, by contrast, is found in the elevated regions of the satellite, made from slowly cooled volcanic flows that formed at different times than basalt. The last two types are formed from compacted and shocked material caused by meteor strikes.
Why do muscles need oxygen?

During periods of heavy lifting or extreme muscle strain, muscles do not get oxygen quickly enough to provide energy. In these cases, the body must convert a substance called pyruvate into a substance called lactate, reports Scientific American. Too much reliance on lactate can lead to high levels of acidity in muscles and disruption of metabolites. When muscles have adequate oxygen, a person performs aerobic exercise for extended periods without trouble. Production of lactate only generates enough energy for one to three minutes of anaerobic activity.

Hydrochloric acid is nonflammable and colorless, and can come in the form of a gas or aqueous solution. It is corrosive to the mucus membranes, eyes and skin and can cause chest pains, inflammation, coughing and other harmful health conditions if inhaled. When ingested, hydrochloric acid can cause damage to the stomach, mucus membranes and esophagus, which can result in diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.

The EPA reports that people exposed to mercury vapor or powder can suffer from ill health effects, including headache, tremors, insomnia, temporary damage to cognitive function and irritability. According to the EPA, in addition to airing out the room, the heating and air conditioning system should be shut off to prevent the circulation of mercury powder or vapors. Anyone who cleans up a broken mercury light bulb should never use a vacuum cleaner because it can spread the mercury. To properly clean up a broken mercury bulb, protective gloves should be worn. The light-bulb pieces should be pick..

The first successful unmanned mission to Mars was with the Mariner 4 spacecraft. It was launched on Nov. 28, 1964. It reached Mars on July 14, 1965, returning photographs of the planet. This was a passing flight, meaning that the craft did not actually land on the Mars; it just flew close enough to capture photographs of the terrain. On Aug. 6, 2012, a robotic space probe landed on the surface of Mars.

If there is a need to figure out the volume of a solution when you have the dilution value make sure to figure out the aliquot volume. The aliquot will be equal to one of the following, the final volume times a concentration factor or the final volume divided by the dilution factor. To find a serial dilution use the formula DF or final dilution factor equals DF1 times DF2 times DF3 and so on. When typically figuring out this formula there will be a three-step process that makes it easier to understand. The formula for a more concentrated solution when using molarity is M1V1 equals M2V2. This mea..

Sometimes the different colors blend with each other, making it difficult to see each color independently. A rainbow is created when drops of moisture in the air act like a prism, which refracts sunlight, allowing the seven different colors to exit the water droplets at different levels. Red is created when the angle difference between the sunlight entering and exiting is 42 degrees, a 40 degree difference produces purple, and so on.

WebMD says that there are over 300 million alveoli in the lungs. After inhalation is complete, the alveoli remove the exchanged carbon dioxide through the exhalation process.\nThe diaphragm aids the inhalation process. The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle. WebMD explains that the diaphragm contracts downward to create a vacuum that helps the air rush into to lungs.\nDuring inhalation, a variety of barriers prevents potentially harmful substances from entering the lungs. WebMD reports that cilia, small hairs in the nose, filter out large particles during inhalation. Cells in the trachea and br..

The Amazon rain forest contains up to 80,000 different plant species. Every 2.5 acres contains between 40 and 100 different species.\nMany of the plants in the rain forest are used in medicine, food and cosmetics. For instance, cocoa seeds are the main source of chocolate. Avocado trees produce an edible, high-protein fruit. The most important ingredient in gum is derived from the chicle tree. The vanilla vine grows beans or pods from which vanilla extract is taken.\nNot all the plants found in the Amazon have food-related properties. Mahogany trees used to be cut down and used for hardwood fu..
