The exact meaning of Kokopelli varies because he is part of many different Native American religions. Kokopelli is the Hopi name for him, but images of the god trace back to Anasazi times. In Navajo mythology, he is a god of rain who sprinkles water from his flute and carries seeds on his back, guaranteeing a good harvest. In some stories, his humped back is actually a sack of goods and he is a traveling trader who plays a flute to announce his presence. In these stories, he is also associated with good luck and safe travels.
