Before 1500, the Catholic Church was the most powerful institution in Europe, owned the largest amount of land, was exempted from taxes and demanded taxes from its followers. The Church was involved in secular affairs, thus losing its focus on spiritual matters. Martin Luther believed that the popes had no authority over the church and that people only needed faith alone to be saved by God. He was excommunicated from the church. During this time, thousands of people left the Catholic Church, and the Catholic Reformation was intended to counter this.

Because the Bible has been in circulation for so long and is the target of such intense study, some of its language has become part of the common vernacular and historical facts mentioned are considered common knowledge.\nFor example, the Chapter 10 review states that the New Testament describes someone who pretends to be what he is not as a "hypocrite," now a commonly used word with a similar meaning. The Chapter 12 review talks of the patr..

Leviticus 11:3 says that Jews may eat only those land animals which chew the cud and have cloven hooves. If an animal fails to meet both criteria, such as the pig which has cloven hooves but does not chew cud, then it is considered unclean and cannot be eaten. Animals that meet both criteria, such as cattle, are considered kosher and fit to be eaten. All kosher animals must be ritually slaughtered by a trained butcher called a schochet.

Although English is gender neutral and has no feminine and masculine distinctions between words, it is descended from Latin, which does. The Latin phrase for earth or ground is "terra firma," which is feminine. Hence, the planet is often referred to as "Mother Earth" and not "Father Earth."Germany is the only country that has referred to itself in the masculine. During World War II, it was known as the "Vaterland," which, although gender neutral, is literally translated as "Fatherland."

The atmosphere inside is likely to remain hushed throughout the day, especially during the monks' worship.
