All other variables being equal, a half-ton truck gets better fuel economy than a 1-ton truck. Excess weight decrease fuel efficiency by about 1 percent per 100 pounds. This reduction is based on the percentage of added weight compared to that of the vehicle, affecting lighter vehicles more.
Driving aggressively by rapidly braking and accelerating wastes gas and lowers fuel efficiency. Observing speed limits is also important to increase fuel efficiency. Optimal fuel efficiency varies by car, but is usually reached at around 50 miles per hour. Avoiding idling and using cruise control are also important when attempting to cut down on gas consumption.
