The 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified on Dec. 6, 1865. The Senate passed it on April 8, 1864, the House passed it on Jan. 31, 1865, and President Lincoln approved it for state voting on Feb. 1, 1865.

By Dec. 6, 1865, the required number of states had ratified the 13th Amendment, which outlaws slavery. It, along with the 14th and 15th amendments, gave Americans more civil rights. After the amendment passed the Senate in April 1864, the House initially did not approve it. Lincoln worked to ensure its passage, and the House ultimately passed the amendment with a vote of 119 to 56.
