An 1878 S Morgan silver dollar is a $1 coin. It was minted by the U.S. mint in San Francisco in 1878. The U.S. Mint produced close to 9.77 million of these coins.
The U.S. Mint produced the Morgan silver dollar from 1878 to 1904. Its name refers to its designer, George T. Morgan. It is composed of 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper. One side of the coin features a left-facing bust of Lady Liberty, while the other side features a left-facing bald eagle.
As of 2014, an 1878 S Morgan silver dollar is valued by collectors at between $38 to $300. Prior to the Morgan silver dollar design, the mint used a design known as a seated liberty dollar.
