What makes a 1943 D steel penny unique?

Unlike most U.S. pennies, the 1943 D steel penny was composed of zinc-coated steel instead of copper, giving it a unique silver look. These "silver pennies" were minted during World War II, when copper resources were rationed for the war effort.

According to USACoinBook.com, a 1943 D steel penny in good condition (a numismatic grade of G-4) is valued at 19 cents, while such uncirculated "wartime pennies" in perfect condition can be worth upwards of $10 a piece. The "D" in the name refers to the coin's origin of minting at the Denver Mint, which minted 217,660,000 D pennies that year.
