The best known and original manufacturer of the .357 Magnum revolver is Smith & Wesson. The company introduced the cartridge in 1934 and the revolver in 1935. The original weapon was named the Registered Magnum.
One of the earliest adopters of the .357 Magnum was the law enforcement community. FBI director J. Edgar Hoover received one of the first models produced. In 1935, the Kansas City police department equipped all of its officers with the weapon. The gun's large bore and high-powered cartridge give the weapon incredible stopping power. The typical .357 revolver can hold six rounds, but the capacity was increased in later models to eight.
