Are 62-year-old people allowed to apply for Social Security benefits?

The Social Security Administration states that people ages 62 and above may apply for Social Security benefits. However, benefits may be lower for people in this age group than for older people.

People who start receiving benefits at 62 can expect a significant decrease in benefits. At age 62, benefits are reduced by around 30 percent. By age 63, benefits are reduced by 25 percent, and by age 64, there is a 20 percent reduction in benefits.

A person's full retirement age determines their full retirement age, or the age in which they receive full retirement benefits. Those born in 1937 or earlier reach full retirement age at 65, and those born in 1960 or later reach full retirement age at 67.
