An absolute neutrophil count is the amount of a particular type of white blood cell in blood, according to MedlinePlus. Made in the bone marrow, neutrophils help fight off infection, particularly from bacteria and fungi, says Mayo Clinic.

A person with too few neutrophils is more likely to get sick from infections than a person with a normal level, MedlinePlus states. An adult with fewer than 1,700 neutrophils per microliter of blood has a low neutrophil count, or neutropenia. Persons who have fewer than 500 neutrophils have severe neutropenia and may even become sick from bacteria that normally lives in the mouth and digestive tract.
