The Acronym Finder website was first published, according to its owners, in 1996. The Internet Archive Wayback Machine, which keeps a thorough log of pages on the World Wide Web, has it listed as far back as May 8, 1999.

The website is a result of research initiated by its founder, Mike Molloy, dating back to 1985, and it is a for-profit business. It provides free search of acronyms, with ads displayed in the results. It also has free tools for a number of web browsers, including Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Opera.

AcronymFinder.com claims to have the most comprehensive acronym database in the world.
