How do you add and subtract integers?

Add and subtract integers by using a number line. You will need a number line that includes both positive and negative numbers. The process takes under five minutes.

1. Add by moving to the right for positive numbers

   Locate the integer to which the number will be added on the number line. Move to the right if the number to be added is a positive number.

2. Add by moving to the left for negative numbers

   If you are adding a negative number, after locating the starting number, move to the left the required number of times.

3. Subtract by adding the integer's opposite

   When subtracting integers, the number to be added should be switched to its opposite before following the procedures for adding integers.
